Why is it so difficult to realize Dy 4+ in as‐synthesized BaZrO 3 ?

چکیده

Rare-earth doped barium zirconate (BaZrO$_3$) ceramics are of interest as proton-conducting and luminescent materials. Here, we report a study dysprosium (Dy) other relevant point defects in BaZrO$_3$ using hybrid density-functional defect calculations. The tetravalent Dy$^{4+}$ is found to be structurally electronically stable at the Zr lattice site (i.e., Dy$_{\rm Zr}^0$), but most often energetically less favorable than trivalent Dy$^{3+}$ Zr}^-$) as-synthesized BaZrO$_3$, due formation low-energy, positively charged oxygen vacancies mixed-site occupancy Dy host lattice. Dy$^{4+}$/Dy$^{3+}$ ratio can, principle, increased by preparing material under highly oxidizing Ba-rich conditions co-doping with acceptor-like impurities; however, post-synthesis treatment may still needed realize non-negligible concentration. We also find that certain unoccupied $4f$ states O $2p$ {\it strongly hybridized}, feature not seen rare-earth-containing materials, isolated Zr}$ might source broad blue emission band-to-defect ("charge-transfer") luminescence.

Why is ALS so Difficult to Treat?

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is proving intractable. Difficulties in pre-clinical studies contribute in small measure to this futility, but the chief reason for failure is an inadequate understanding of disease pathogenesis. Many acquired and inherited processes have been advanced as potential causes of ALS but, while they may predispose to disease, it seems increasingly likely that none...

Challenges for Brain Emulation: Why is it so Difficult?

In recent years, half a dozen major research groups have simulated or constructed sizeable networks of artificial neurons, with the ultimate goal to emulate the entire human brain. At this point, these projects are a long way from that goal: they typically simulate thousands of mammalian neurons, versus tens of billions in the human cortex, with less dense connectivity as well as lesscomplex ne...

Why is Knowledge Management So Difficult?

The “big idea” with knowledge management is that in a fast-moving and increasingly competitive world, a firm’s only enduring source of advantage is its knowledge – the knowledge of its individual employees, and the knowledge that gets built into its structures and systems. Consulting companies and R&D organisations have known this for years, but increasingly even “old economy” firms in oil, ste...

Why Is Educational Entrepreneurship so Difficult ?

Much of the recent literature on improving education in the United States seeks to promote entrepreneurship as the solution to raising educational quality and equity. But, the historical record documenting substantial and sustained departure from conventional educational practices is scant despite numerous attempts at entrepreneurial innovation. This paper contends that the challenge of entrepr...

Why is health reform so difficult?

This article examines the possibilities for health care reform in the 111th Congress. It uses a simple model of policy making to analyze the failure of Congress to pass the Clinton health plan in 1993-1994. It concludes that the factors that created gridlock in the 103rd Congress are likely to have a similar impact in the present.
